"Writing Off Tom Westgard" or "Why should we be afraid of making a neighborhood safe?"

8/10/2008
Mr. Westgard,

What you have written today in Rogers Park Rake is over the line. It does not begin to approach fact or objectivity and exists only as an example of your capacity for unfounded and damaging speculation. It is genuinely depressing that a self-appointed community activist cannot hide his enthusiasm for something horrible and illegal being carried out against a diverse and hard working group of Rogers Park community members. Why someone who purports to have something meaningful to offer the Rogers Park community would repeatedly articulate his utter and undeserved disdain for a group of individuals who are working to achieve something positive is beyond the scope of reason.

You have entitled yourself to comment on, to judge, and to draw conclusions regarding a situation that you simply have not seen and do not understand. The combination of your lack-of-access and your demonstrated penchant for quasi-journalistic invention has eroded whatever credibility you may have begun with.

Rehashing the same abridged “facts” concerning individuals and groups that you personally dislike does not legitimize your disgusting “everyone must think like me” mentality and it certainly does not make true what you have written. The group of people who will have nothing to do with you is becoming larger in number and more convinced of your incompetence with every bit of tortured negativity that you proudly pen.

In spite of how uncomfortable it makes you, individuals who hold different political affiliations and different ideologies from one another are cooperating to make Rogers Park even better. In spite of the fact that you have kept yourself involved in the political discourse strictly by encouraging instability among ever evolving factions, progress continues.

By cheering on whoever attempted to burn down the theatre you have only succeeded in burning all of your bridges.

Sincerely,
The Sane and Civil Residents of the 49th Ward
